What it’s all about…

At CareersFest you’ll experience what it’s like to be a student at Cornwall College for a day. You’ll meet our expert teaching team, visit our amazing sites and try out some of the equipment and facilities you’ll use when you come here. You’ll also be able to spend the day with some of the students you might be studying alongside, so you’ll have familiar faces when you start in September.

Oh, and at lunchtime you can take part in our mini festival with a live DJ, games, free food and the chance to WIN a laptop!

There will also be the chance to see some of the amazing opportunities at our specialist land-based and marine facilities at Duchy College and Falmouth Marine School.

🥡 Food – Lunch is on us (who doesn’t love a free meal!). Just let your teacher know any dietary requirements when making your experience choices & leave the rest to our award-winning chefs!

🚌 Transport – Your school will arrange transport to and from the campus.

Catering 👩‍🍳

What will you do?  

Level up your summer barbecues with this fun hands-on catering experience.   

Identifying suitable meat, fish & vegetablefor your dishes, you will prepare food for the barbecue, learning how to combine flavours to create simple and yummy marinades and present your food in a professional way. 

Of course, tasting is an essential part of this experience, so make sure you let us know any dietary requirements or allergies you have.

Hairdressing & Barbering 💇‍♂️

What will you do?  

If you want to work in the hairdressing barbering industry, then this is the experience for you. 

Get hands-on creating a friend’s look for a night out, by trying out plaiting and twisting, using woven foils, cap-lights, curling and straightening. 

Our experienced team will be on hand to help you familiarise yourself with colouring techniques used in the industry, as well as using styling equipment safely to achieve different effects.

Media Production 🎥

What will you do?  

This experience will give you a glimpse into the world of ‘hands-on’ media production and filmmaking 🎬 

Perfect for anyone who wants to work in television, film, journalism, advertising, radio, web design or animation 📷 

Take a tour of our television studio with a full 3 point black magic studio camera setup, control room and production space, not to mention our bespoke Foley sound studio and edit suites. 

We’ve got loads of professional film and television equipment for you to try, including canon cameras, cranes, drones, gimbals and our Adobe creative suite software 🎥

Photography 📸 

What will you do?  

If you love taking pictures, then this experience will give you a fun and hands-on intro into the world of creative and commercial photography 📷 

Learn about the ‘camera obscura’, an ancestor of the modern photographic camera, and work with your friends to create a giant version that you can actually step inside.  

Next up, you’ll learn to take amazing portrait photos on our professional cameras or even on your own phone!  

Learn to set up various lighting scenarios, ranging from using natural light or lights you’d find around the house, to taking portraits in a full professionally lit studio 💡

Fashion (Art & Design) 🥻

What will you do?  

Want to be the next great fashion designer? Put your imagination to the test and get involved in our ‘Project Runway Paper Fashion Challenge’ 🥻🕶 (with real prizes!) 

Let your imagination run wild, learn about fashion design techniques through practical exploration and show us how inventive you can be with paper and a glue gun 🔥 

You’ll design, develop and produce a runwayready haute couture piece and accessories using only paper or other upcycled and recycled materials  

What do you need to bring? 

Nothing in particular buy maybe don’t wear your best “I mustn’t get paint or glue on these” clothes!

Graphic Design (Art & Design) 🎨

What will you do? 

We are surrounded by graphic design and typography daily, from billboards to websites, to posters and road signs; it’s everywhere! 😲 

Using digital and mixed media, this workshop experience will be an exploration of urban design and typography 🔥 

Have a go using photoshop to layer type, taking inspiration from grungy ripped billboards to create a large mixed media piece of work incorporating collage, monoprinting and painting skills 🎨 

Graphic design isnt all about logos and sitting at a computer you know 😉 

What do you need to bring? 

Bring your imagination and your creativity but maybe don’t wear your best “I mustn’t get paint or glue on these” clothes!

Beauty Therapy 💅

What will you do?  

Want a career in the beauty industry?  

Glow up your summer festival nails with this beauty experience.  

We’ve got a range of practical activities lined up to help you learn a range of beauty therapy, make-up and nail techniques.  

Here’s some of the things we will cover:  

  • Paraffin wax treatment 
  • Learn a variety of hand arm massage techniques 
  • Nail art with crystalsglitters, transfers, stamp, foils & stickers 
  • Application of water-based paints and glitters to achieve festival themed face art 
  • Basic preparation of nail care for polish application  
  • Achieve different paint effects using brushes and sponges.

Health & Social Care 👨‍⚕️

What will you do?  

This interactive, practical session will give you the experience of providing care in the community. 

Working in our fully-resourced Care Academy clinical suites, you will practice providing care to individuals living in their own home, using supportive equipment such as hoists, elevated beds and assistive resources whilst maintaining the person’s dignity.    

Our specialist staff will be on hand to help and answer any questions you might have, as well as sharing their own experiences of working in the sector.

Childcare 👨‍👧

What will you do?  

Experience first-hand the practical skills you’ll need to work with children!  

Have fun creating forest friends, willow structures and houses for critters using natural resources.  You’ll interact with our computerised babies and pregnancy bumps and get messy with sensory play and learning.    

Our specialist staff will be on hand to help and answer any questions you might have, as well as sharing their own experiences of working in the sector.

Travel & Tourism 🌐

What will you do?  

Have some fun in the sun with this Travel & Tourism experience. 

Through a range of themed games and practical activities, you’ll get a taste of a career working in the Travel & Tourism sector and the importance of exemplary customer service skills. 

Take a ‘flight’ to your holiday destination before heading off on a whistle stop tour of famous sights from around the world.  

Along the way, you’ll learn lots of practical knowledgeincluding how to check-in and board passengers for a flight, carry out a safety demonstration, make PA announcements and deliver an inflight food service. How to conduct a coach transfer. 

Finish off your ‘trip’ with a takeaway sustainable souvenir to keep from our travel photo booth.

IT (Information Technology) 🖥️

What will you do?  

This experience is a fun, hands-on introduction into the practical world of information technology. 

 It’s perfect for anyone passionate about computing, programming, website development, social media or cyber security.  

 Split into two sections, you’ll learn through hands-on activities, firstly exploring a network topology, witnessing a live Distributed Denial of Service (DDos) attack before constructing one of your own. 

 The second half of the session will involve learning about software development, writing code like a professional software developer.

Sport ⚽

What will you do? 

Love to keep fit? Our sports experience is for you ⚽🏀 

We’ve got basketball, football and ultimate frisbee lined up to help you hone your skills and teamwork. Not to mention checking out our amazing sports facilities, including sports hall, brand new outdoor astro-turf, sports science lab and gym 💪 

What do you need to bring? 

You’ll be active for this experience, so will want to wear something suitable for sport– preferably trainers and football astro boots. 

Military Academy 🇬🇧

What will you do? 

 Is joining the military in your future?  

 Our dedicated military academy is the kickstart you’ll need for a career in the forces or uniformed services  🎖 

 In this hands-on experience, first you’ll learn about crime scene investigation techniques in a practical CSI task 🔬 

 Following that, there’s the chance to get active on our amazing military assault course 💪

Engineering 👩‍🔧

What will you do? 

This experience will let you build your way in engineeringexpanding your understanding of modern engineering roles, gaining new hand skills and improving your ability to work in a team 💪 

Design, build and test an air cannon or trebuchet/catapult to fire a range of objects at targets, with prizes for most accurate and longest range 😊 🎯 

You’ll also create your own ‘dog tag’ on CNC machines to take home and keep, and take on our ‘build a tower’ challenge 🗼 

What do you need to bring? 

Besides your enthusiasm and sense of humour, you should be prepared to work in an environment where clothing is likely to get dirty (dust/grease marks), sturdy footwear should be worn (no open toed footwear). 

Construction 👷

What will you do?  

This practical session will give you hands-on experience in both working with wood and bricklaying.  

Sharpen your carpentry skills by making a college-branded wooden smartphone stand to take home and keep. We’ve also got a demo of our CNC router lined up for you to see how it works.   

For bricklaying, you’ll work as a team to construct a self-supporting archway and test its strength 💪 

What do you need to bring? 

You should be prepared to work in an environment where clothing is likely to get dirty; sturdy footwear should be worn (no open toed footwear). 

Plumbing & Electrical 🚰

What will you do?  

Through a number of hands-on practical activities, you can get a mix of experience working in Electrical, Plumbing & Gas. 

Once you’ve tried out your soldering skills making a copper keyring to take home and keep, you can take on our timed pump challenge, fit a tap, and even learn about heat pump technology and basic Gas controls. 

 For the aspiring electricians, you will cut a back box into a wallsee demos of electric motors and the effects of magnetismas well as trying your hand at bending conduit to exactly 90 degrees. 

 What do you need to bring?

What will you do?

What will you do? 

Gear up to a career in automotive engineering with this highoctane round of hands-on activities 🚗🔧 

Our ‘pit stop challenge’ is waiting. Dyno test run cars in our fast fix workshop before taking part in vehicle lift and team task on an HGV truck 🚚 

What elseHow about trying out airbrush painting & car graffiti in our Body and Paint workshop? 🚘😎  

Overall, this experience is a valuable insight into working in the automotive industry, covering new and emerging electric vehicle technology, Basic hand skills, as well as vehicle technology and safety 💪

Aeronautical 🚀 

What will you do?

This hands-on experience will give you the chance to build your own aero designs, before testing them out in our air tunnel 💨

Games Design 🎮

What will you do?  

If you love playing computer games and want a career in one of the fastest growing and dynamic sectors in the creative industries, then this experience is for you! 

Broken into two sections, you’ll explore the games design processcreating a basic First Person Shooter (FPS0 level in the game Unreal Development Kit (UDK). 

Learn how to draw and map and plan the layout ready to be created in the game engine. Then use this map to build your basic level, adding textures and 3D meshes to create your own environment. 

The second part of the experience focuses on the concept and application of QA testing for video games. 

Learn why it’s important for companies and how it benefits the consumer by playtesting and producing simple bug reports using a template sheet. From checking spawn points, clipping issues and more, all the basics of how to playtest a game will be covered. 

Our passionate team will be on hand to answer your questions, talk about your favourite games with and share their knowledge of creating a video game through practical environment building using 3D development software.

Animal Management 🐅 

What will you do?  

Discover your inner zoologist with our animal management experience🐅 

Our passion is for the natural worldjoin us in our Exotics Room, handling and feeding a range of animals from leopard geckos and bearded dragons to royal pythons 🦎🐍 

That’s not all 😊 We have a range of large and small livestock, including sheep, pigs, goats, ponies and donkeys, as well as small mammals 🐑 🐖 🐐  

Discover their welfare needs in captivity and how enrichment is key to keeping them healthy and happy 💚 

You’ll also learn about the impact of human activity on the environment and ecology, covering how selective breeding is threatening the existence of well-loved species and breeds in the world today. 

What do you need to bring? 

It’s best to wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty (trousers rather than skirts).  

On your feet, wellies or sensible shoes are best. Try to avoid open toed shoes and wearing jewellery.  

Horticulture 🌼

What will you do? 

Get your hands dirty with our horticulture experience 🌱 

Covering both plant science and landscape design, you’ll get to look closer at the ground beneath your feet by analysing soil!  

Learn what soil is made up of and why it’s so important to human and animal survival 🌎 

Perfect for any budding gardeners, landscape designers, tree surgeons, florists or horticultural scientists. 

 What do you need to bring? 

Please bring overalls or outdoor clothes, steel toe-capped boots or wellies and waterproofs just in case it is wet.

Wildlife Conservation 💚

What will you do? 

There has never been a more important to focus on the protection of our natural world 🌏💚

Get hands-on with our wildlife conservation experience, carrying out wildlife surveys and identifying species around our beautiful 100 acre site at Duchy College Rosewarne.

With its incredible horticulture and wildlife conservation department and facilities, there really is no better place to study the natural environment around us.

You’ll learn about what organisations like The National Trust, The Wildlife Trust and the RSPB are doing to protect our environment.

With a passion for conservation, there are a huge number of career paths you can choose from.

Whether you’re a ranger, ecologist, environmental health practitioner, nature conservation officer, recycling officer, woodland manager, the job you choose really can make a difference.

What do you need to bring?

Please bring- Overalls or outdoor clothes, steel toe-capped boots or wellies and waterproofs just in case it is wet.
