NCFE Garden and Plant Design

Already done some drawing and surveying? Develop your skills further as a Designer.

Through the year you will develop both your drawing and presentation skills and assess the impact of garden history on design.

During the course you will develop a portfolio that you can use to showcase your work to potential clients and employers.

Ideal if:

You have some knowledge of garden design or you have already completed the NCFE Level 2 Garden and Plant Design course.

You’ll need:

Level 2 Garden Design qualification or industry experience.

You’ll learn:

  • Surveying and plotting levels on a garden plan. Looking at how they will influence your design.
  • Complete construction drawings and cross section/elecvations
  • Developing graphic skills
  • Develop skills in applying design principles to the production of garden and planting plans
  • Improve skills in the production of both developmental drawing and section elevations and axanometric drawings
  • Develop knowledge of garden design history and its application to modern design
  • Develop knowledge of garden design history and its application to modern design
  • Develop knowledge of hard landscaping features and materials
  • Develop knowledge of plant identification and selection criteria to ensure choices are responsive to ecological conditions
  • Explore commercial briefs and produce work in response to a commercial brief
  • Develop skills in business documentation required to sequence/programme work schedules from initial consultation through to completion of a project


Assessment will be through a portfolio of work developed through the year. Design tasks will run through the year. Allow about 3-4 hours per week for assignment/drawing work.
