The course is suitable for an absolute beginner who has no previous experience of growing vegetables. The benefits of growing is known to be a way of improving your well-being so if you are recovering from a poor health and wish to become more active and be outdoors then this course is for you.
No qualifications or previous experience required.
In this unit the learner will be able to understand the ethos of growing organically; prepare an outside bed for growing; identify which flowers encourage pollinators into their garden; consider which vegetables produce to grow for themselves; learn two methods of controlling weeds; grow and care for plants grown from seeds; and consider two methods to improve plant yield.
You will be working on a community market garden which is in its first year of development. You will be able to share your growing successes and not so successful growing experiences with everyone and take away some useful hints and tips to improve your yield of vegetables.
We will be working inside the walled garden in Powderham Castle.This is a very beautiful environment with plenty of wild life to watch and listen to. It is planned to do a field trip to other sites to see how others grow their vegetables.
It is recommended that the learner moves onto:
Level 1 Grow Veg Grow Well on ‘Cultivating compost and soils’
Level 2 Grow Veg Grow Well which is a more detailed insight into vegetable production and crop rotation and how continuity of cropping can be achieved.
