In February 2014, we attained the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for our leadership of skills development across the region’s rural economy.  In 2015 Duchy College (part of The Cornwall College Group) merged with Bicton College to become the region’s largest land-based education and training provider.

Ideal if:

you wish to gain knowledge of tree science and woodland management, alongside practical skills in tree work.

You’ll need:

four GCSEs at grade C or 5, including English and maths.

You’ll learn:

tree climbing, pruning and dismantling, tree identification, planting and care, woodland management, plant and soil science, tree felling and chainsaw use, tree surveys, pests and diseases.


to participate in an active and outdoor-based course; to develop your tree climbing skills and understanding of woodland management.

You’ll love:

the historic Bicton estate with extensive parklands, arboretum and specimen trees, with opportunities to develop your tree climbing techniques.

You’ll go on to:

further study in forestry and arboriculture or you could go into employment.

Phillip Hruza Programme Manager - Arboriculture

Phillip has worked in the industry for 10 years, progressing from a full-time climber to running his own business. He started working with Bicton College as an instructor and now manages the arboriculture programme. His specialism is practical aerial arboriculture; helping students to learn the skills and techniques to work safely and efficiently making sure they are fully prepared for the demands of the industry.
