Bicton College Bicton LEVEL: Professional Qualification Animal Management & Veterinary Nursing

Course Description 

The aim of AMTRA (Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority) Merchants Courses is to equip those who qualify to be eligible for inclusion on the AMTRA Register of Suitably Qualified Persons and to undertake responsibility for registered premises. The course provides an understanding of animal husbandry, including the causes and control of diseases in farm livestock, horses, cats and dogs. A knowledge of the law relating to the sale and supply of licensed animal medicines and the principles of good merchandising practice.

Please note that you will need to register with AMTRA to get your course manual, this is not done by Bicton once you have booked your place on the course.

Course Duration: 

2 days plus exam

Applicants must be 16 years of age or older.

The exam must be booked directly with AMTRA by sending the Exam Booking form, found in your manual or call AMTRA on 01359 245801

What You Will Study 

Intended Learning Outcomes:

  1. Apply the VMD Code of Practice to the role of a SQP in issues related to farm animals
  2. Identify the specific disease challenges of farm animals in the UK and deviseappropriate methods of prevention and control.
  3. Interpret an Animal Health Plan, evaluating its implication on the prescription of medicines and the health and welfare of farm animals and human safety.

Indicative Content: Role of an RQP; Scope, REgistered premises (buildings, storage tempaerature control etc), prescribing and/or supplying authorised veterinary medicine to owners/keepers of farm animals e.g. Certificate of Competence when supplying sheep dips.

UK relevant Diseases for Cattle / Sheep / Pig & Poultry

  1. Endo Parasites
  2. Ecto Parasites
  3. Micro organisms
  4. Nutritional diseases

Control programmes: a range of UK relevant problems in farm animals using appropriate medicines, POM-VPS and AVM-GSL, in an authorised manner.

Animal Health Plans: interpretation of carious plans and their implications on prescription and supply of animal medicines, withdrawal periods, safe use of medicines and human health issues.
