Apprenticeships in Cornwall and Devon

My name is Chae Wallis. I’m a bricklayer and a Level 1 apprentice at Cornwall College.

I chose to do an apprenticeship for the money and to get a taste of what my future will be like on-site as a bricklayer.

The skills I’ve learned in my apprenticeship include fast thinking and maths. For example, when we get a profile up from one corner to another, we set a string line gauged up by 225mm. You start on one corner and run it along, making sure you’re breaking the bonds underneath by 100mm. You also make sure the perps—the vertical joints—aren’t over 300mm. If anything goes above the line, you leave it until you finish the course, then put the line up again at 225mm and repeat the process. This was the first house I ever built.

The advice I’d give to someone doing an apprenticeship is determination. When you think you want to quit, just keep going. It’s all worth it in the end.
