This apprenticeship is for people who want to become a qualified Fabrication and Welding Engineer. This is a follow on course from the Performing Engineering Operations Apprenticeship.

An apprenticeship is a great way to gain a new qualification while staying in your current job and earning money. At the end of the course, you will have a nationally recognised qualification and no debts to pay! Over 85% of our engineering apprentices are offered permanent positions by their employers once they have completed their apprenticeship.

With a Level 3 Diploma in Fabrication and Welding, you are qualified to the level of a craftsperson or technician. In the future you could work as a plater/fabricator, sheet metal worker, steel erector/fabricator or welder; and then progress to a project manager or programme director position.

You may be interested in studying further and complete a Diploma in Engineering Leadership, Diploma in Business Improvement, Diploma in People Management, FdSc Engineering, HNC Engineering or a BSc (Hons) Mechanical Design and Manufacture. Alternatively, you could work towards professional engineering technician registration or full welder status.

Who is this course for?

This apprenticeship is designed for people who want to train on the job to become a qualified Fabrication and Welding Engineer.

You must have good practical skills, be able to follow technical drawings and work carefully and methodically.

This is a follow on course from the Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations Apprenticeship, and supports those working in a junior craftsperson or technicians position.

Entry requirements

To enrol in this apprenticeship, you need to be aged 16 and over, ideally have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C (preferably English, Maths and IT) and be employed within a suitable position.

You must have completed the Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations Apprenticeship or have the relevant experience.

Course overview

You will attend lectures at the Camborne or St Austell campus 1 day per week for 2 years.

During this apprenticeship you will have the opportunity to select a pathway to suit your job e.g. manual welding, welding machine setting and operating, sheet metalworking (3mm or less), plateworking (3mm upwards), structural steelwork, pipe and tube fabrication or composite fabrication.

You will put together a portfolio of evidence to show that you are competent at the tasks you do every day, while receiving support from experienced Cornwall College tutors.

Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the following qualifications:

Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Engineering
Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Engineering

What's next?

With a Level 3 Diploma in Fabrication and Welding, you are qualified to the level of a craftsperson or technician.

Depending on the industry, a craftsperson can work as a skilled machinist, tool-room craftsperson and a maintenance or skilled fitter; a technician can work in technical support, assisting in design and development, and maintenance of electronic systems.

In the future you could work as a plater/fabricator, sheet metal worker, steel erector/fabricator or welder; and then progress to a project manager or programme director position.
