Twelve students from Lycée Jean Queinnec College in Malestroit, Brittany, France joined a Deloitte Employability class at Cornwall College Camborne where they found out how to make a good pasty.

The group was split into three teams to compete to see which team could produce the most authentic looking Cornish pasty. Each team was a mixture of English, French and Lithuanian students working together to create their pasties for judging.

The pasties made by all three teams were marked on quality and appearance.  Solène Drean, Cindy Galminche, Samantha Lenglet, Ophélie Brohan, Katie Williams, and Declan Harrington’s pasty was judged the best, scooping them  a trophy for their efforts.

Winning team member Declan Harrington, 17, a Business Extended Diploma student from Camborne said: “I really enjoyed the experience of working with other students from a different country. It was a good opportunity to put my team building and communication skills to the test.”

Accompanying teacher, Madame Joëlle Salaün from Lycée Jean Queinnec College said: “Cornwall College is teaching their students good teamwork and leadership skills as your students have worked so well with ours, they involved them in the activity and supported them all the way.

“We have had a very good time here; everyone thoroughly enjoyed the pasty making challenge. We are planning to visit again in March 2011 and we are looking into making this a regular trip. ”

Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College said: “Cornwall College welcomes visitors and students from all over the world to sample college life at any of our seven campuses. We are pleased the students from Lycée Jean Queinnec College joined in the Deloitte Employability class and got involved in the competition with our students. It’s good to hear that they enjoyed their time with us and we look forward to welcoming them again in the near future.”

Deloitte Employability Skills are integrated into Business Studies courses at Cornwall College, offering students the opportunity to develop and hone their team building and presentation skills, essential for a successful future in business.
