Who is this course for?

This apprenticeship is designed for people who want to train on the job to become qualified in marine engineering; while laying the foundation for a career in building, fitting out, finishing or maintaining boats.

You must have good practical skills, be able to follow technical drawings and work carefully and methodically. This course supports a variety of positions e.g. boat builder, laminator, marine electrics and marine engineer.

Entry requirements

To enrol in this apprenticeship, you need to be aged 16 and over, ideally have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C (preferably English, Maths and IT) and be employed within a suitable position.

What will I be doing on the course?

You will attend lectures at the Falmouth campus 1 day per week for 2 years.

During this apprenticeship you will have the opportunity to select your pathway and units to suit your job e.g. installation and fitting out of boats, servicing and maintenance of marine engines, principles of marine electrical systems or producing and repairing hulls and decks.

Depending on your workplace, you may have the opportunity to work on variety of boats e.g. ships, tankers, ferry boats, fishing vessels or sporting boats.

You will put together a portfolio of evidence to show that you are competent at the tasks you do every day, while receiving support from experienced Cornwall College tutors.

Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Marine Engineering
  • Level 2 Certificate in Boatbuilding Maintenance and Support

What can I do after the course?

With a Level 2 Marine Engineering Certificate, you are qualified to the level of a junior craftsperson and may progress to a more senior position with more responsibility. Thereafter you can start working towards the Level 3 Marine Engineering Diploma, by enrolling in the advanced apprenticeship.

This apprenticeship could be the foundation in your career and could take you in a variety of directions; in the future you could work as a designer, fitter, operator, project manager or programme director.

You may be interested in studying further and complete a Diploma in Engineering Leadership, Diploma in Business Improvement, Diploma in People Management, FdSc Engineering, HNC Engineering or a BSc(Hons) Mechanical Design and Manufacture.

There are no apprenticeship course fees charged for anyone between the ages of 16 and 18.  For those aged 19 and over, fees do apply.
