How is the course studied at this venue? -   If you enjoy being on the water and you love sport then this course is ideal for you. Study the science of achieving success in sport and learn the skills to help you help others to do better. Through lectures, seminars and practical sessions afloat and on land, together with work based learning in the industry, you can be at the cutting edge of marine sports development.
 You will get the opportunity to develop practical as well as academic skills, right in the centre of Falmouth. You will also make the most of water-based activities in the area. By combining the expertise we can guarantee the aspiring marine sports science graduate the very best in tuition and resources that Cornwall can provide.
 In addition you will undertake practical skills training towards NGB awards in: sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, power boating and first Aid. You will also develop skills in rock climbing, coasteering and surfing. For those who achieve the required NGB or requisites you will be given a subsidised place on a Coaching qualification on the above sports.
 This course also includes several field trips including one week aboard (normally Greece or Egypt) to a High Wind Watersports Centre.
  Progression route: Upon successful completion you can progress to the final year of the BSc Hons Applied Marine Sports Science at the University of Plymouth. Alternatively you could study a degree course at a university of your choice or pursue a career in the marine leisure industry.

Entry requirements


120 UCAS points from AS and A-Levels (at least 80 points must be at A2-level) or relevant level 3 qualification i.e. BTEC National Diploma/BTEC Extended Diploma - PPP Grades required. Access to HE Diplomas - 45 credits at level 3.  Plus GCSEs at grade C or above in English language and mathematics: alternatives at Level 2 may be considered.


Potential students must be prepared to be actively involved with the practical opportunities whilst on the course.


Mature applicants with relevant experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered individually and are encouraged to apply.

What will I be doing on the course?



Whilst based at Falmouth Marine School you will study specialist university sports courses with a marine focus. The facilities on campus offer the opportunity to develop practical as well as academic skills, right in the centre of historic Falmouth. There will be a varied mixture of lectures, practical sessions and work-based learning and by combining the expertise of teaching staff we can guarantee the aspiring marine sports science graduate the very best in tuition and resources that Cornwall can provide.


You will also make the most of water-based activities in the area through three week-long blocks of time spent on the water, spread throughout the year, with the aim of working towards your National Governing Body (NGB) qualifications in kayaking, windsurfing and sailing.


In addition you will find some lessons can be done using surfing, coasteering and land-based sports. For those who achieve the required NGB requisites you will be given a subsidised place on a coaching qualification on the above sports.



What can I do after the course?



Our graduates have gone on to set up international businesses, progress to managerial positions and further their academic excellence.
