College's Carbon Message in Car Share Week Success
Students and staff at Cornwall College campuses across the county have been doing their bit for the environment.
The College held a Car Share Week to encourage students and staff to think about how vehicles are harmful to the environment and cut down on carbon emissions by sharing journeys to and from college.
Many people from the College’s seven campuses including Camborne, Newquay, Saltash, St Austell, Duchy College Stoke Climsland and Rosewarne, and Falmouth Marine School got involved.
Throughout the week 215 journeys were shared, 2131 less miles were travelled and 703kg of carbon emissions were saved.
As a thank you to those who took part, each person who shared a journey received a raffle ticket and winners of a drawer on each site were presented with a Fairtrade food hamper containing only Fairtrade produce.
At Camborne, the winner was Katie Gerrans from Falmouth. She said: “What a lovely prize – not only lots of goodies that’ll win me brownie points in the office but every item is Fairtrade – that’s excellent.
“Car share is so important and it’s actually nice. I started sharing with two colleagues from the campus here. With the high volumes of traffic on roads I was finding driving stressful – fuel is expensive and the environment is suffering too. Now I share the driving and it’s nice to have company on the way in. I’d definitely recommend it.”
Finance Officer Linda England, who claimed the hamper at St Austell, said: “The car share scheme is a really good idea, especially with the environmental impact of cars on the road and the limited parking at St Austell and I think more people should do it.”
Duchy College Rosewarne winner Alison Prisk regularly shares with three colleagues. She said: “This is a really nice surprise as quite a few people entered. It’s great to car share because it’s greener and you get to do your bit for the planet while saving money at the same time. I’m really delighted and the hamper is lovely although I don’t think the chocolate will be leaving the office!”
Student Liaison Officer Becki Lewis won at Saltash. She said: “The Car Share Week was a great idea. It’s certainly made me think about what carbon emissions are doing to the environment and made me realise it’s really easy to car share and enjoyable too!”
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said: “The idea behind introducing the Car Share Week was to make students and staff think about how their vehicles affect the environment. It definitely served its purpose with many people continuing to share after the week finished. We’ll be thinking about how to improve on this success in the future.”
