New Students Introduced to College
To prepare students for college life, Falmouth Marine School recently held three Specialist Applicant Events for all new students starting in September.
After an introduction from the relevant Course Manager the students were told of the timetable for that day. Divided into two, one half of the day comprised of fun activities on the water, the highlight of which was a boat trip around Falmouth Harbour on the sail training ship Hardiesse. The second half of the day gave students a chance to gather information on courses and qualifications, finance, accommodation and anything else they needed to know. Students took the opportunity to look around College once more, get help filling out outstanding paper work and talk to tutors and staff about any issues or concerns they had.
The events were organised by the College in order to leave more time during induction for the students to get to know each other, get involved in all the activities planned and enjoy themselves to the full during their first few weeks at College.
This year the College has a whole host of activities planned including a trip to the Southampton Boat Show and the Annual Freshers' Fair, being held this year on Friday 25th September.
Organised by Falmouth Marine School Student Liaison Officer Pip Green, the fair opens at 10am and is open to all students on all courses at all levels. The day begins with a briefing and registration before students are given goodie bags and set an activity aimed at getting them to know each other and make friends, as well as familiarising them with the town. Last year in teams of five students were set the ‘Discover Falmouth Challenge', which involved identifying photographs in shop windows. Local businesses targeted for the activity were in particular those that would be of interest to them as well as those offering student discounts.
Businesses across Falmouth will once again take part in the activity as well as donating products for goodie bags.
Pip Green commented: "The Fresher's Fair was a great success last year and everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves. I'm excited about what we have planned for the students this year and am sure it will go really well with even more students attending."
Dave Linnell OBE, Principal of Cornwall College commented: "Falmouth Marine School pride themselves in providing their students outstanding support right from the moment they apply. These Applicant Events highlight the College's commitment to their students."
