Celebrity helps celebrate chefs of tomorrow
Cornish-based celebrity chef Nathan Outlaw was among the many guests that helped Cornwall College Camborne students celebrate their achievements at their Hospitality, Catering and Tourism Awards evening at Heartlands in Pool recently.
Held in the magnificent Chi-an-Bobel Great Hall at Heartlands, the event celebrated the successes and achievements of this year's students, with awards sponsored and presented by local and national businesses such as Nestlé, Oates Travel and Doble Quality Foods.
As well as delivering an inspirational speech about his career to date, his experience of working with Cornwall College and his hopes for new initiative Academy Nathan Outlaw which launched at the College recently, Nathan also presented the Nathan Outlaw Award to joint winners Daniel Ballett, 18 from Truro, and Nathaniel James, 18 from Redruth.
Both students, who have just completed their Professional Cookery Diploma (Kitchen & Larder) VRQ Level 3, were presented with the award after demonstrating a good knowledge of their subject and maintaining a high level of achievement in all aspects of their course.
Speaking after the presentation, Nathaniel said: "I'm ecstatic that I've won and I really didn't expect it, so I'm quite shocked too! I've really enjoyed my course and I'm keen to enrol on another, as I'd like to study more about gastronomy and the science of food."
The Student of the Year Award, sponsored by Cornwall Catering Excellence, was presented to Jessica Legg, 17 from Truro, for the level of commitment and enthusiasm she showed and the consistent exemplary standard of both her assignments and practical work.
Jessica, who has recently finished her Food Service Diploma VRQ Level 2, said: "I'm so pleased and so surprised that I won! I've enjoyed my course so much and I'll definitely be back in September to start my Level 3 course."
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "This has been a great event and it's a fantastic opportunity to celebrate so much achievement. As a college, it makes us extremely proud to see our students do so well and we're also very proud of our excellent teaching staff who have worked so hard to help them get to this point, especially when people like Nathan Outlaw want to be involved in supporting and working with us. I'd like to congratulate all tonight's winners and wish them all the best for the future."
