Velux masterclass for students
Students at Cornwall College Camborne were treated to a masterclass from a top UK roof window and skylight manufacturer recently, earning themselves an accreditation as installers along the way.
Technicians from Velux, the leading global manufacturer of roof window and skylight products, delivered the masterclass to the College's Site Carpentry Diploma Level 3 students at the Camborne campus, as part of their course unit in roof light installation.
Adrian Bushill, one of the Service Technicians that visited the College, said: "This is the first time we've visited the Camborne campus and we'd like to do this every year now, as we've had such a good response. The students have been great and really attentive, asking lots of questions and sharing their own site experiences throughout the classroom presentations we gave. Once we set them working on our rigs, they became even more enthusiastic and really seemed to enjoy it."
As well as bringing with them three complete installation rigs for the students to practice on, the Velux technicians gave the students practical demonstrations, showcased the company's newest products and advised them on best practice, installation techniques and the latest regulations.
Dale Adams, 27 from Redruth, said: "Today has been interesting and very useful, especially as we will get an accreditation from Velux as well. I'm currently completing my apprenticeship with Arval Construction and what I've learnt today will be really useful to me in my workplace."
Bob Harris, Curriculum Area Manager for the Construction department at Cornwall College Camborne, said: "Having the Velux technicians here has been beneficial to both the students and the staff, keeping everyone updated on the latest products, techniques and regulations regarding installation of roof windows and skylights. I would be very pleased to welcome Velux representatives back each year to work with the students, as it is a great opportunity for them to receive training from industry experts and get an extra qualification at the same time."
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "At Cornwall College, we are really proud of the links we have with industries, employers and manufacturers and our staff work hard to maintain those links in order for our students to benefit from them. Masterclasses like this are a great opportunity for our students to receive some intense specialist training and really enhance their learning experience, teaching them new skills they can incorporate in their workplace, both now and in the future."
