College students "Sparkle under the Spire"
Students from Cornwall College got the chance to take part in a rather high-profile event recently, when they were asked to host and serve guests at the glittering 'Sparkle under the Spire' celebration at Truro Cathedral, held to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
Working as part of the Fifteen Cornwall team, students enrolled on various courses within the Catering & Hospitality faculty at the College's Camborne campus were involved in decorating the tables, preparing drinks, welcoming guests and serving the delicious four course menu prepared by the talented chefs at Fifteen Cornwall using a wealth of the finest Cornish produce.
The prestigious and unique event, which was also the first formal dinner to be held in the nave of the Cathedral, was a resounding success and raised over £35,000 for the Cathedral's Inspire Cornwall Appeal, which is supported by Gold Sponsors Dairy Crest, First Great Western and Ginsters.
The inspiration behind the event came from Lady Mary Holborow, former Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, who has supported the appeal since its launch. The money raised will contribute to Truro Cathedral's major development projects focussing on restoring the Old Cathedral School and creating a multi-purpose Creative Arts Centre.
Lady Mary said, "It was truly spectacular, and a privilege, to be in such a beautiful building to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, enjoying the best Cornish food, the Cathedral Choir and wonderful company. I am delighted that the event raised significant funds for the appeal which wouldn't have been possible without the generosity of so many businesses and individuals."
Speaking after the event, Acting Dean, Canon Perran Gay, said "What an absolutely amazing occasion. So much preparation and hard work by so many people really paid off. It was a stunning evening and one that was enjoyed by all those present."
Student Jess Legg, 17 from Truro and currently studying the Food Service Diploma VRQ Level 2, said: "I was so nervous beforehand, especially serving so many important people, but once I started working, I really enjoyed it. It was a great night and a brilliant way to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee."
Fellow student Lydia Kewn, 20 from Penzance and also studying the Food Service Diploma VRQ Level 2, added: "I've never worked at such a big event before, but I wasn't that nervous really. I did thoroughly enjoy it though and it gave me a chance to see what these events are really like."
Lorna Dunstan, Programme Manager at Cornwall College Camborne, said: "This has been a great experience for the students and they have all done fantastically well, working professionally and efficiently with the team from Fifteen Cornwall. I think it's really made them appreciate the skills and training they've received during their time at college."
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "Our students were outstanding and really represented the College well at such a prestigious event. I would like to congratulate them on helping to host such a successful evening and thank the staff involved for supporting and encouraging them in their efforts."
