Runners treated to massage therapy by Cornwall College students after Duchy Marathon
Students from the Foundation Degree Complementary Health Therapies course at Cornwall College Camborne were given the chance to put theory into practice during the recent Duchy Marathon in Redruth.
The students were invited to take part in the day's event by the organisers of the marathon, Cornwall Athletic Club, at the Penventon Hotel in Redruth. They were offering leg and foot massages to all the runners that took part in the marathon and were certainly made good use of; overall, 55 pairs of legs were massaged by the students during the afternoon. This was a great chance for the students to try out techniques specifically designed for runners and athletes that they wouldn't normally get to do in class time.
Andy Davies, from Newquay Runners, was very impressed by the service on offer to him after the marathon. He said: "It was really relaxing and a great way to wind down. It was interesting to chat to the students too and find out more about this area of study."
The Duchy Marathon has grown in popularity over the past few years and people travel from all over the UK to take part. The Duchy marathon is the 2nd longest established marathon in the UK and is one of the earliest marathons in the year.
Emma Stepto, secretary of Cornwall Athletic Club, said: "All the students taking part in the after care of the runners did a fantastic job! They were extremely professional and it was a real pleasure to have them involved in the event. On behalf of Cornwall AC and all the marathon runners, I would like to say a huge ‘thank you' to the Cornwall College Complementary Therapy students for providing a great, and much enjoyed service."
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "This is a popular sporting event in the region and has been a great opportunity for our students to get first hand experience working in an environment they will one day have as their career. I'm thrilled the students were able to have this opportunity."
