Duchy College Zoo Diploma Level 2 in Animal Management

Duchy College are now working in partnership with Dartmoor Zoological Park and have created a unique and exciting opportunity starting in September 2012! This Level 2 course is for school leavers and adults living in the Plymouth area who are keen to learn about animals, particularly those kept in a zoo environment.

What are the entry requirements?

The entry requirements are at least a Grade C in GCSE English or Science, an excellent level of attendance at school and a strong interest in exotic animals.

What will I do on the course?

This is a fantastic opportunity to spend time at Dartmoor Zoological Park, working with exotic animals, learning about the specialist care they require and developing employability skills for working within an animal-based environment. The Zoo provides a unique environment for learning all about the wide range of animals it houses, including big cats, bears, wolves, meerkats and a wide range of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.   You will work closely with Duchy College staff and the Education and Keeper teams at Dartmoor Zoo, spending one day a week (Fridays) on site at the Zoo and two days per week (Wednesdays and Thursdays) at Duchy College Stoke Climsland, which will allow you to access our excellent Animal Management Centre,  IT facilities and Learning Centre resources.  Subjects to be covered include:

•·         Animal Health and Welfare

•·         Animal Housing and Feeding

•·         Care of Exotic Animals

•·         Caring for Zoo Animals

•·         Animal Behaviour and Handling

•·         Working in Industry

There are no exams for this one year course and assessment is via a number of written assignments and practical assessments taken throughout the year of study.  You will also undertake a one day per week work placement (on either a Monday or a Tuesday) in an animal-based organisation of your choice - our Work Experience Co-ordinator can help you to find a suitable placement)

Opportunities to visit other zoos, animal businesses and even Crufts Dog Show are all available for you as a student within the Animal Management Department.
