Smurfs, Cake Sales & Coastal Walks for Charity!
STAFF and students from Duchy College Rosewarne have been raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Children in Need in a number of fund raising events held over the last few days.
Students studying the Countryside and Wildlife BTEC Diploma raised £50 for Children in Need by walking the three mile coastal path from Godrevy to Hayle Towans. As well as making the trek for charity the activity was also an opportunity to explore the local wildlife and landscape as part of their studies. The group tucked in to a well-deserved pasty at the end of their hike!
Sarah Chafer, Course Manager explained: “We wanted to do something for charity and the students decided that a coastal walk would be a great way to raise some money and explore coastal habitats at the same time. We saw some interesting butterflies along the journey and lots of examples of sand dune erosion which they will use in their habitat assignment.”
The College also went ‘blue’ on World Diabetes Day and raised over £100 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Staff and students wore blue, donned Smurf masks and some even went a step further - dressing up as Smurfs for the day!
Skills for Life students threw a cake sale and bring and buy stand for the cause, organising the stalls themselves as part of their teamwork module.
Marina Evans, 16, from Illogan said: “I enjoyed organising the stalls, I helped with the signs and posters for the event, it was good fun and we’ve sold quite a lot.”
Andrew Counsell, Head of Duchy College, said: “At Duchy College fundraising is very important to both staff and students, throughout the year we actively support and raise money for charity. These fundraising events are also a great opportunity for students to work as part of a team and try new things as well as trying to raise as much money as possible for good causes.”
