New Agriculture Course for College
Duchy College Rosewarne will be offering a new agriculture course from this September aimed at students wishing to develop their technical knowledge and gain a better understanding of the management of different agricultural enterprises.
The qualification is an Agriculture Extended Diploma Level 3 which is equivalent to three A-levels and can provide students with an alternative route to university.
Charles Atkinson, Agriculture Curriculum Area Manager, explains: “We’re really pleased to be offering this course at our Rosewarne campus as it now means that those students in the West of the county can study locally at a higher level. Careers in agriculture are proving ever popular and this course gives people the opportunity to study the theory behind farming.”
Current Agriculture Level 2 student Josh Wright, 16, from Newquay is going to start this course in September. Josh said: “I’m looking forward to it as it’s more in depth and will hopefully help me get a better job. It will also give me the opportunity to study the foundation degree at the Stoke Climsland campus which is worth thinking about. I’ve always had an interest in farming and it’s great that I can study these courses locally.”
During the course students will study the theory, science and permitted practical skills associated with cropping systems, farm mechanisation and livestock as well as areas of farm diversification and management reflecting the agricultural industry in the West of Cornwall. There is also the option of a sandwich year which will provide opportunities to gain and broaden practical experiences either at home or abroad.
Charles added: “From this course successful students can expect to progress on to university courses, apprenticeships or go straight in to employment to help further their career and knowledge in the industry.”
Andrew Counsell, Head of Duchy College, said: “Our agriculture provision is going from strength to strength and we’re really delighted to be delivering this course. It highlights the wide range of specialist courses at the College and will provide excellent opportunities for students hoping to work in agriculture.”
