World Record for St Austell Community at Olympic Torch Event!
A once in a lifetime event took place in St Austell this weekend that many people will remember for years to come. The World Record for the largest cream tea party was achieved at the Poltair Park Big Flame Fest.
The charity event which was organised alongside the passing of the flame through St Austell has been incredibly well supported by local businesses and organisations with approximately £50,000 being donated in resource. Donations ranged from a huge marquee from the Eden Project, fencing from Speedy Hire and tables and chairs from Penrice School, to smaller donations from local organisations like prizes from Bay Design and scones for the tea party from Dobles and Brake Brothers. The event was attended by the Mayor of St Austell, Cllr Sandra Heyward, who took part in the cream tea World Record. She commented: “I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this hugely successful day, in particular to the college for their record breaking cream tea and to all who worked tirelessly to ensure that the record was well and truly broken.”
The event which was largely organised through Cornwall College St Austell and St Austell Town Council had incredible support from the bowls, football and rifle shooting clubs who offered taster sessions in each sport.
Activities on the day included dance and music performances and culinary demonstrations by students and staff from Cornwall College, local food stands offering a wide range of tasty goods, a bouncy castle, face painting, nail art and a cake and jam-making competition. All money raised at the event was donated to The Little Harbour Hospice.
The cake bake and jam-making, which was judged by director of Martins Bakery Stuart Hawkins, Grant Mather who is Head of Catering at Cornwall College St Austell and Rosemary Netherton from the Women’s Institute. It was a very competitive affair with some excellent entries from all ages.
A beaming Tessa Claridge, deputy head of Cornwall College St Austell, said: “It has been an amazing achievement and a really great way for St Austell to come together and celebrate the passing of the torch, this event would not have been possible without the passion and enthusiasm from so many locals and businesses, you know who you are and I really cannot thank you enough for the support.”
