Hairdressing students at Cornwall College St Austell presented their work to an audience of friends, family and employers at the College?s annual awards ceremony last week

The ceremony gives students an opportunity to demonstrate their skills on stage making use of the College's state-of the-art-theatre, The Keay. Students from the Hairdressing department teamed up with Performing Arts students to create an unforgettable evening of dance music and fabulous hair.

Guests at the Hairdressing Awards were welcomed by Margaret Edgcumbe, Head of Hairdressing and Beauty at the College, she said: "The students' preparation for the awards is invaluable experience as they move on to work in the hairdressing industry. We have encouraged our students to work in teams in the lead up to the Hair Awards, which is an essential skill in industry. Not only have the students enjoyed the teamwork, but they have been able to use creative skills outside of their normal study."

The audience enjoyed pre-awards performances around six spectacular themes; Cats - top hats to alley cats, Four Seasons - shades of change, Fire, Ice - and the extreme, Stepford Wives - ready to please, Time Warp - a journey through iconic times and Freak Chic - twisted minds. These individual shows, performed by the students, provided an exciting build-up to the awards presentation. There were 17 awards to acknowledge outstanding work from absolute beginners through to the more experienced students.

David Linnell Deputy CEO of Cornwall College presented the awards. Emily Westaway, (16) one of the award winners, a pupil at Penrice School and studying hairdressing at Cornwall College's salon based in Poltair School; she said "I was really happy and surprised to win the award. The hairdressing course at Poltair School has been great fun and it has given me a better idea of what I want to do in the future." Emily received ‘Future Pathways Outstanding Student Award 2007'.

The themed performances climaxed to the thumping soundtrack of Marilyn Manson's, ‘The Beautiful People' during the "Freak Chic" performance. Students from Penrice School were thanked for their involvement with the show.

John Latham, principal of Cornwall College said: "I couldn't be more proud of our students than I am tonight. It has been a truly fabulous evening with some outstanding work on display, would like to thank the sponsors Goldwell and Aston & Fincher and all of the employers and parents attending these awards, we couldn't do it without you."
