Falmouth Wins Two Student Stars Awards
Students from Falmouth Marine School scooped up two prestigious awards at this year's Cornwall College Student Star Awards.
The annual event is held by the College to celebrate outstanding student effort throughout the last academic year. Staff and students nominate students for a range of categories for FE and HE including:
- Sporting Achievement,
- Innovation & Leadership,
- Volunteering as well as awards for Progress,
- Endeavour and Excellence.
The nominations are then shortlisted before being assessed by a panel of judges consisting of staff from across all seven sites.
Shortlisted candidates along with their nominators were invited to the black tie dinner at The Atlantic Hotel in Newquay on Wednesday 3rd June, where the winners were announced.
This year Falmouth Marine School students were nominated in three categories, with five students shortlisted for awards. Tim Fitter and Katy Warriner for the Volunteering Award; Tom Blakemore and Matt Gigg for the Cornwall College SU Students' Student of the year Award and Kimara McCrindle for HE Student of the Year.
Falmouth managed to scoop two awards, including the prestigious CCSU Students' Student of the Year category, won by Matt Gigg second year student on the Watersports National Diploma and the Volunteer Cornwall sponsored Community Award won by Katy Warriner studying on the Marine Science foundation degree.
Matt Gigg one of the winners said: "I was really surprised and very happy to win the award. It was a really good night and we all had a good time, after the awards and dinner there was a band."
Pip Green, Student Liaison Office at the College said: "It was a wonderful evening for everyone. The students seemed really excited and honoured to be nominated. The awards are a great opportunity to celebrate the student's successes over the past year."
Dave Linnell OBE, Principal of Cornwall College commented: "This was a prestigious award ceremony for some exceptional students. These students have shown themselves to be outstanding in many different ways. I congratulate all of the winners and the runners up and wish them the very best of luck for their future success. In reality, each and every one of them is a shining ‘star'."
