Sport students help out at Cornwall School Games
A TEAM of students from Cornwall College St Austell and Duchy College have assisted with the Cornwall School Games at Newquay Tretherras School.
The event, the largest multi sport competition in the county, sees over 3000 primary and secondary school students competing in events such as athletics, cricket, rowing, volleyball, rugby, surfing, lifeguard skills, skate boarding and more.
The College students studying BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and A-level PE supported in a number of roles on the day, including, umpires, coaches, scorers, results recorders and general helpers.
Dani Hay, from St Austell, said: “It was great to be able to help out with the skateboarding and scooter competitions. As an ex Brannel School student it was hard to remain unbiased when supporting the students competing at this event!”
The event’s opening ceremony had a few special guests, including replica Olympic torches and some Olympic hopefuls proudly sporting their team GB tracksuits. With messages from Dame Kelly Holmes being played on the big screens next to the main stage, music from Heart FM and a highly entertaining dance competition, the event had a real festival feel.
Oli Elston, also from St Austell, commented that: “It was a real honour to umpire the final of the short tennis which was won by a single point from a player from Truro Prep School.
Curriculum Area Manager for Sport and Public Services, Brett Marsh, said: “It made a nice change to be able to sit back and watch the event and spectate on a wide range of sports. I was proud of the way the students conducted themselves and stuck to their tasks for several hours.”
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, explained: “Sport is high on the agenda at Cornwall College and it’s great that our students were able to support this event and help to make it a great success.”
