Duchy College Rosewarne has a brand new course starting this September that could be just for you!

The College will be offering a new Higher National Diploma (HND), equivalent to the first two years of a degree, in Garden & Landscape Design, subject to approval from Plymouth University. The course is aimed at those with a passion for gardens, design and management of the landscape.

Bill Herring, Curriculum Area Manager for Horticulture, explained: “This programme aims to integrate the creativity of art and design with core knowledge of horticulture, earth sciences and landscape technology. So if you are looking for a career where you can have an influence on the environment in which you live by having the design skills, plant knowledge and related experience then this programme is for you.”

During the course students will study a variety of topics including the tools and techniques to effectively develop and present your work, sustainability, garden and landscape history, advanced planting design, professional practice and project management, practical horticulture and science for designers. Innovative and creative design practice is core to the programme and through projects students will learn how to design thought-provoking gardens and landscapes in a variety of locations and for diverse user groups - from private clients to public landscapes with contemporary themes such as design for health and wellbeing, children and the elderly.

Throughout the course students will be actively encouraged to realise and develop their own professional and design identity. The wide and extensive links the College has with many of the gardens in Cornwall, will give students the opportunity to gain work experience while studying.

Bill added: “The programme will enable students to pursue a career within the garden and landscape design industry, landscape management and may also appeal to those who wish to gain a deep understanding of garden design for more holistic reasons.”

Andrew Counsell, Head of Duchy College, said: “Our horticulture provision is going from strength to strength and we’re really delighted to be delivering this course. It highlights the wide range of specialist courses at the College and will provide excellent opportunities for students hoping to work in the industry.”

There is also the ability to study the first year of the programme and complete a one year Higher National Certificate in Garden and Landscape Design. The College offers a number of scholarship and bursary options for higher education students. All undergraduate courses at Duchy College are awarded by Plymouth University.
