Cornwall College has recently hosted the Cornish Language School open day in the Karenza building of the Camborne campus, with many members of the public visiting for the duration.

The language school open day was held on the same day as Cornwall Colleges' which allowed a cross over of people to visit the Skol Veythrin Karenza  facilities and then talk to Cornwall College staff about possible study for careers in Childcare Development and Healthcare Studies.

The Saturday language school was opened up in 2010 and with support from Cornwall College has been held on the Camborne site ever since. Skol Veythrin Karenza which simply translates to Cornish Language School was originally set up as part of Movyans Skolyow Meythrin with the aim of discovering how much interest there was locally for parents and young children to learn Cornish.

Over the past two years the school has seen around ten families use the school on a weekly basis with parents learning with a separate teacher to the children. From the beginning, SVK has tried to encourage the learning of the Cornish language for use in the home as well as at school.

Cornwall College opened the doors of the SVK open day to encourage members of the public to come and visit the school and see what happens there, and how the language is taught to youngsters. Anne-Marie Young, Curriculum Area Manager for Health & Childcare, said: "This was a fantastic opportunity for me and other Cornwall College staff members to see the work that is carried out in the pre-school that's available on our own campus. We listened to a song and a story being read and even learned some Cornish on the day."

Rhisiart Tal-e-bot is one of the teachers with SVK and programme leader for the foundation degree in Children and Young People's Workforce at Cornwall College and was happy with how the open day went: "It was a pleasure to see so many new students and colleagues at the open day. They were really keen to learn about the teachings of Cornish language. Cornwall College have been really supportive of the project over the last two years and it has been wonderful to organise this event with fellow members of staff."

Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "The Cornish language school open day has been a big success, giving staff, current and potential students the chance to see the extra additions that Cornwall College can offer the community."
