Reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions on-farm
The SWARM Hub has produced new material drawn from Defra funded work that will help to reduce pollution and greenhouse emissions from farming systems.
The project, funded by Defra "An Inventory of mitigation methods and guide to their effects on Diffuse Water Pollution, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, and Ammonia Emissions from Agriculture" (link to existing report) was conducted by ADAS and Rothamstead Research North Wyke.
These pages provide summarised information on a range of different on-farm management options to reduce pollution (either diffuse water or air) and greenhouse gas emissions.
There are 83 different management practices that have been investigated, ranging from soil, fertiliser and manure management to changing farm infrastructure or livestock systems. All of these have been broken down into time scale (short, medium or long) and also into the different enterprises found on farm. Systems covered include dairy, horticulture, indoor and outdoor pigs, poultry, mixed, lowland grazing, upland grazing, combinable crops and combinable roots.
