Who is this course for?

Radio Production is the latest course to be offered by one of the country's leading creative industry training providers dBs. This brand new programme will provide you with high quality, authentic and hands-on radio making skills and expertise preparing you for university or the employment market within the industry. This is no ordinary course, you will be making real radio content for dBs Radio and a range of other commercial and community stations. The course will be delivered within technology rich environments and all resources will reflect current industry standards and practices. Also core to this radio provision is the development of entrepreneurial, journalistic and communication skills.

We are very proud of our brand new centre in Camborne, Cornwall where we have dedicated radio studios, recording studios, practice rooms, and teaching spaces. dBs is nothing like a standard college or sixth form. Our students represent a diverse media and music making community who you will work and collaborate with during your time with us. Our dedicated facilities support active learning and are dedicated to media, music and creativity. We pride ourselves on our supportive, friendly, inspiring and fun learning environment.

Entry requirements

If you are under 19 you will normally need to have either a BTEC Level 2 Diploma, Intermediate GNVQ or equivalent in a related subject or four GCSEs at grades D and above. If you are over 19 there are no specific requirements and every applicant will be considered on the basis of their experience, enthusiasm and the potential to achieve. We believe that many prospective students who may not have previously had a successful education are capable of achieving. If you feel you don’t have the necessary qualifications or experience please come and see us, we are always happy to help and advise.

What will I be doing on the course?

A successful radio production course requires a large amount of hands on time. Whilst students do need a foundation of theory to support their vocational practice, it is our belief that students should spend most of their time honing their craft in seriously well-equipped production facilities. Segmented into NCFE Certificate, Subsidiary and Extended Diploma pathways this programme will be delivered at dBs studios in partnership with Cornwall College in Camborne. You will be required to attend college for 2.5 days per week, this is made up of 1 day working at the radio station and 1.5 days guided lectures, workshops and tutorials. Outside of this time you will be required to work on projects and gain as much experience and knowledge as possible.

What can I do after the course?

Upon successful completion you may progress to:

  • a Foundation Degree in Media or Radio Production
  • a Foundation Degree in Audio Production
  • employment at entry level in the music industry or related vocational area
  • freelance in a wide range of areas of the music industry.
