Who is this course for?

This course is for you if you’re looking for a more practical, vocational route into higher education. The HND in Creative Media Production is a skills based, hands-on course  that provides the practical expertise needed for first jobs in film and TV and online media. You’ll get the chance to make a range of media products from short narrative films and documentaries, through to promotional videos and websites to professional standards. This is a full-time, two year course. Students will have the opportunity to gain a full range of practical skills within both a theoretical and work place environment. The course also acts as a stepping stone to other higher education opportunities, as successful students can top-up to the third year of a BA (Hons) in Media at a partner university. The mix of academic rigour and work place experience on the course gives you a unique opportunity to develop your career within a challenging educative framework. This is ensured by the teaching staff on the course and a programme of guest lecturers and master classes delivered by working Producers, Directors and Camera, Lighting and Sound specialists. The majority of the course is taught by media professionals who bring an understanding of professional pragmatism to the process - through which you can develop subject-specific skills. The HND in Creative Media Production is delivered in our newly equipped Television Studio and our excellent video editing suites. We have a full range of professional media equipment and software to enable our students to develop transferable skills for the rapidly changing contemporary media industry.

Entry requirements

Mature applicants with relevant experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered individually and are encouraged to apply.

Previous learning and experience may be credited. If in doubt, call 0845 22 32 567 or email enquiries@cornwall.ac.uk.

What will I be doing on the course?

From the outset, through formal lectures, practical workshops, masterclasses and assignments, you will be encouraged to combine your skills to create a range of media products. You will also be given the opportunity to get involved with professional productions and clients.

On completion you will be well on the road to realising your ambitions to become a competent and creative media professional.

Practical skills form the basis of the course: there is a strong focus on moving image production through effective preproduction, camera work and video editing, alongside integrated web site development and creation.

Work experience is an important part of the study programme and you should expect to be producing professionally commissioned work throughout the course as this is what will provide possible employment opportunities for the future.

In the first year you will create your own media company and use that company as a calling card and organisational base for all of your media productions. You will use that company to produce two major productions, a corporate or promotional video and a fictional short film. Should you decide to take the second year to gain the HND you will develop a website for your company, then using the content generated in the first year you will launch your company identity with the aim of beginning to produce your own professional work.

What can I do after the course?

At the end of two years of study you should have developed the skills and qualifications necessary to start work as a contemporary media practitioner: with routes into the modern interdisciplinary media industry. Alternatively you could choose to continue your studies for one more year to top up to an honours degree.
