TRANSPORT

FREE transport to college for 16-18 year olds with a household income below £31,000.

Cornwall College is offering free bus transport to new and returning students from September 2013, as part of a continuing support package for those eligible.

Students aged 16 to 18 can apply for help from the Further Education Bursary Fund which will cover the cost of a one year bus pass.

To qualify for free transport, students will need to live more than three miles away from the College and live in a household where the total annual income is less than £31,000.

All the campus sites offer comprehensive transport networks including subsidised buses with pickups all over the county. If you choose to drive to college, most of our sites have limited car parking.

College Bus Network
There is a special network of LEA contract buses, Cornwall College contract buses and Public Service buses which has been set up to offer widespread coverage of the county. All are subsidised and available to students living more than 3 miles away from College.

Students will be expected to use a college bus wherever possible, unless circumstances mean that they have to use another form of transport e.g. the student has a disability or children who have to be collected from school or childcare.

Transport awards can also be made to students aged 19 or over at the start of their course. Students living within a three mile radius are not eligible.

First Concession Scheme
First Bus Devon & Cornwall, are running a scheme for all Cornwall College students. The scheme involves purchasing a pass (£25 per academic year or £31 per full year ) which will allow students to travel on any First bus at child fare rates. If you are interested download the application form here (PDF 224k) and send in the completed form to the Transport Officer, Cornwall College St Austell, Tregonissey Road, St Austell, PL25 4DJ. (Tel: 01726 226404).

Bus Buddy System
We understand that some students may experience difficulties with travel to and from College. Whether you are worried about not knowing anyone, have any insecurity, or special need, the Bus Buddy scheme has been devised to make your journey more pleasant.

Bus Buddies were introduced very successfully in 2004. Volunteer students offer to accompany students with concerns on College buses. The benefits of this have been great all round.

If you feel this initiative would be of use to you, please let your Transport officer know when you make your travel application. We will then endeavour to match you with a volunteer in your area.

The Transport Officer would also like to hear from students willing to be volunteer buddies. A free bus pass is offered for this scheme and involvement counts towards Duke of Edinburgh Award.
