Research Details

Having completed a Cert Ed it was suggested that I should continue my studies and complete a full degree. Having a wide range of outdoor qualifications and National governing body awards, I decided not to follow the traditional route in my sector, and complete a degree in outdoor education or adventure management, but that I would gain more from studying a complementary area. I selected Education & Training, as the degree offered courses which I felt would be beneficial to all areas of my work.

I have completed the foundation degree and am now in the 3rd year of the BA (Hons). I chose to complete all my studies through distance learning as my role within the college makes regular attendance very problematic.

To date I have completed the following courses: Aspects of cognitive psychology ; Diversity and differentiation; Issues and policies of assessment practice. My current study is an independant study module focusing on self efficacy which will be submitted along with my Professional Development Portfolio.

Having completed my independant study module focusing on the evaluation of the use of a behaviourist theory in the provision of foundation level outdoor education. This subject was chosen as a direct link to my role in developing (Re-launching) an outdoor education course for level students at Duchy College. I feel that the research conducted for this module assissted me in clearly identifing that we lacked provision inthis area and focused my thoughts on what format this course should take.

The last module I completed was 'Working with People' (submitted pending assessment result)
This module was chosen as it allowed me to focus on the subject of team working and group interaction. This is directly linked to many areas of outdoor leadership and education. The area I chose to research was the effect on the Sport dept of recent changes to organisation and location and how sub -cultures exisiting within teams can be either positive or negative depending on perceptions.

I intend to submit my PDP for May which will allow me to complete my dissertation reasearch through the summer. For this I intend to examine the subject of self efficacy within the level 2 outdoor students at Duchy College.

The PDP module was submitted and completed succesfully. unfortunately the planned area of research for major project module has had to be revised as the proposed area of research investigating the subject of self efficacy within the level 2 outdoor student cohort did not prove viable due to the drop in studnet numbers for the course. After discussion with my tutor (Dr Les Garner)I have decided to research the facilitation of learning within outdoor education and how current coaching methodology governs my teaching pedagogy.
