Students and staff at Cornwall College St Austell are excited to be involved in the upcoming Poltair Park's Big Flame Fest held on the morning of Saturday 19th May 2012.

The event at Poltair Park to celebrate the Olympic torch is a collaboration between the College, Cornwall Council, St Austell Bowls Club, St Austell AFC and St Austell Rifle Club. With just over a month of preparations left, the College are this week launching information about the baking competitions that will complement the culinary demonstrations planned for the three hour event from 10am until 1pm.

Jo Plester, bake-off organiser explains: “All competitors will follow the same recipe for each category, except for the jams and chutneys, but are allowed to embellish their entries by creating a unique look using sprinkles and butter icing.”

Categories for the competitions are as follows; currant biscuits and/or basic bun for age groups 10 years and under, 10-15 years and 16-18 years and for the adults’ buttery fruitcake and basic jam sponge. The jam and chutney competition is open to all and any variety and recipe can be used for this.

Entries for competitions can be registered before the event or you can bring them on the morning of Saturday 19th May, making sure that they are at the Bowling Club in Poltair Park by 9.30am. Members of the public can choose to enter more than one category and for each category competitors will need to pay £1, which you pay on the day.

Jo continues: “There will be prizes for first place, second and third, after these have be announced the baked goods, jams and chutneys will be sold at the event and the money from this and the entries will go to Little Harbour charity. We look forward to seeing all the entries from the local community and to see if any really stand out!”

Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College commented: “We are very proud to be involved in organising this Olympic torch event as it means so much for Cornwall and the local community, this is a very unique time for the UK. We hope that people from all age groups will come to the event at Poltair Park to join in the festivities and fun.”
