Specialist courses launch at college
Cornwall College Camborne is to offer three new hair and beauty courses from September, focusing on boosting specialist skills to meet the growing needs of industry.
The three courses, which focus on theatrical media hair and make-up, barbering, and salon management, have been developed after identifying a gap in the Cornish market and a growing demand for courses of this type.
Bobby Northcott, Curriculum Area Manager for the hair and beauty faculty at Cornwall College Camborne, said: "We've done a lot of research into what courses are available locally and nationally and discovered that there few places that offer these courses, especially in Cornwall. We also organised masterclasses and training events for our staff and existing students earlier this year, which generated a great deal of interest and showed that these is a demand for these courses locally."
Focusing on media, fashion and photographic make-up and teaching the techniques of applying prosthetic and hair pieces, the new Theatrical Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up Diploma Level 3 course at Cornwall College Camborne will develop students' creative make-up skills, so they can pursue a career working in the media, theatre or television as a professional make-up artist.
The Barbering City & Guilds NVQ Diploma will be offered as a Level 2 and Level 3 qualification at the campus, and is aimed at those looking to specialise in this area or who are already working in this field. In addition to cutting hair using creative techniques and designing facial hair shapes, the course will also feature a unit in hot-shaving services using traditional razors making it one of the first courses in the country to do so.
From next term, Cornwall College will also be offering a Salon Management Certificate Level 4 course aimed at existing or aspiring salon managers looking to gain a formal qualification. In addition to units in stock control, promotion, data analysis and monitoring working practices, students can also choose to study additional units in areas such as public relations and client care quality depending on their business' needs.
All three new courses will be available at the Camborne campus from this September and the college has already received a number of enquiries and applications to enrol.
Don McKenzie, Head of Cornwall College Camborne, said: "At Cornwall College, we work closely with businesses to ensure that our courses and their content reflect what's going on in the industry as a whole. Developing and offering new courses like these means that students who study with us benefit from learning the latest techniques and theories and develop their skills using the most up-to-date equipment and technology, which will prepare them well for their future career."
