Magic of make-up explored in theatrical master class
Students at Cornwall College Camborne were treated to some master classes with a difference recently, to celebrate the launch of a new course in theatrical and media make-up at the College.
Students at Cornwall College Camborne were treated to some master classes with a difference recently, to celebrate the launch of a new course in theatrical and media make-up at the College.
Top Cornwall-based make-up artist Amy Skinner delivered the master classes to groups of current hair and beauty students, showing typical looks that will be demonstrated on the new Theatrical Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up City & Guilds Diploma Level 3 course when it launches in September.
As well as creating two theatrical fantasy-themed looks using water-based make-up products, Amy demonstrated the art of postiche, using fake hair-pieces and wigs to enhance theatrical make-up, and gave invaluable advice to the students about considering stage lighting, budgets, costume design and how easy it will be for actors to recreate the looks themselves when working on a production.
Amy, who now lives in Newquay, trained at Brushstroke at Shepperton Film Studios and worked as a make-up artist on the 2006 British film "Confetti" and hit Channel 4 TV show "The Friday Night Project", as well as for multi-national make-up brand MAC in London and German film production company F & P Media. She said: "The students were fantastic and really seemed to enjoy the master classes. It was a great opportunity for me to pass on my knowledge to such a rapt audience! I'm also really excited about the new course the College is launching, as there aren't many in Cornwall and it will be a great opportunity for the students."
Ryan Walker, 19 from Camborne and currently studying the Hairdressing Diploma Level 3, said: "Today was amazing and I would love to study this course. I really enjoyed listening to Amy and hearing how she got into the industry, and her ideas and the looks she created were brilliant."
Fellow student Michelle Mutton, 20 from Redruth and studying the Beauty Therapy Diploma Level 3, added: "Listening to Amy was inspirational and she gave us a really good insight into the industry. I found it really interesting and the looks were very pretty."
Bobby Northcott, Curriculum Area Manager for the Hair & Beauty faculty said: "This was a great experience for the students and Amy was professional and really knowledgeable, using examples from her career to share with them. It's a great way to launch the new course we'll be offering and highlights exactly what students could achieve and learn whilst they study with us."
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "Experiences like this really enhance the practical and theoretical knowledge the students have already gained during their time with us, and I'm glad the students enjoyed these master classes. It also shows what additional opportunities we can offer students locally, helping them strive for success and achieve their career goals."
