Pupils Explore Local Wildlife
LOCAL school children enjoyed a day out at Duchy College Rosewarne recently where they spent the day learning about local wildlife with final year undergraduates.
Reception, year one and year two pupils from Kehelland Village School, in Camborne, took part in a number of wildlife workshops designed and delivered by the Conservation and Countryside Management Foundation Degree students.
Students created different teaching sessions involving a combination of classroom and outdoor workshops for their Environmental Education module along the theme of British wildlife.
Kerry White, from St Ives, said: “It was really good, the pupils seemed to enjoy themselves and it was great experience. My workshop took place outside and they enjoyed being able to explore different habitats. The thought of having to teach environmental education was quite daunting at the start of the course but we’ve done lots of work leading up to it and I thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Fellow student Jamie Pikesley, from Mylor, went one step further and dressed up as a safari tour guide for his workshop! Jamie added: “It was really good fun and I’d like to do it again. I concentrated on British invertebrates and we went on a safari around campus looking for creepy crawlies, the pupils were very enthusiastic and I’m now thinking about doing a PGCE after my top-up year.”
Both Jamie and Kerry are going to top their foundation degree up to a full honours degree next year, Jamie is staying local at Cornwall College Camborne and Kerry is off to Bournemouth.
All workshop sessions were designed by the Duchy College students using the National Curriculum and featured a range of activities and assessment methods to ensure that particular learning aims were met.
Andrew Counsell, Head of Duchy College, said: “This was fantastic experience for the students, a great opportunity for them to showcase their knowledge and learn new skills.”
All undergraduate courses at Duchy College are awarded by Plymouth University.
