Students Dive in Egypt
Students from Falmouth Marine School and Cornwall College Newquay have just returned from an action packed, sun drenched week in Egypt.
First and second year students studying degree courses in Marine Science and Marine Conservation, spent a week in Dahab, Egypt, last week, diving, snorkelling and conducting scientific research as part of their studies.
FdSc Marine Science student Jessica Hirons said: "This is the second time I have been on the trip and yet again it didn't disappoint, I particularly enjoyed diving with a green turtle at Dahab’s famous blue hole, such an unforgettable experience. I also learned valuable survey skills which will help me if I later choose a career in coral reef conservation.”
The students spent a day snorkelling conducting surveys of the Mangrove forest and carried out coral reef mapping at four dive locations in Dahab. The final day was a free day and students took the opportunity to Camel Safari or visit Ras Mohammed National Park for one last dive.
First year FdSc Marine Conservation student from Newquay Richard Taylor said: “It was a wonderful opportunity to dive and carry out research in a contrasting habitat. To see coral and species that can't survive in our waters was amazing. I will definitely sign-up again next year."
Claire Eatock, Programme Manager, Marine Science at Falmouth Marine School said: “The students were a real pleasure to be away with. The focus and tenacity they showed in their diving and scientific research development really blew me away. This is the third trip to Egypt that the College has organised for the students. There really is no better way for them to get a real understanding of working in different climates than to experience it firsthand."
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, commented: “These trips are an integral part of the Marine Science and Marine Conservation courses at Falmouth Marine School and Cornwall College Newquay. As well as the training, students get a chance to see and experience a location where they might one day be working as well as becoming familiar with a new country and culture.”
