Students from Cornwall College St Austell have raised over £1000 this week by organising a large charity raffle as part of their college course. All proceeds are going to The Little Harbour Hospice.

The students, all on the NVQ Massage Diploma Level 3, had to organise a promotional activity as part of the more business-orientated elements of their course. “Most of the students on the course are mothers and we all wanted to organise something that benefitted Little Harbour,” explains student Janey Drysdale-Wood, 38, from Newquay.

A lot of local organisations donated goods and services to the raffle and the students used some of their other skills by baking cakes and selling them on the day.

Holistic Course Manager Debbie O’Boyle said: “The girls can be really proud of their efforts, they worked as an excellent team, they have all made individual contributions to the raffle and have utilised any extra skills they have. Well done girls.”

At present the students have over £800 raised but are expecting to collect another couple of hundred in the next few days. They jointly wished to express a huge thank you to all the local organisations that donated and took part in the raffle. They would especially like to thank The Bay Hotel, St Austell Garden Centre and The Pier House to name but a few.

Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said: “At Cornwall College fundraising and community involvement is very important to both staff and students. It is great that the students have used a module on their course to organise the raffle for Little Harbour; a very worthwhile charity.”
