Students learn from court experience
Over the past three weeks students from Cornwall College St Austell have been experiencing real court proceedings.
Students on the AS-Level Law course have been regularly attending Truro Crown Court, visiting the court in groups of six, with some even choosing to attend in their own free time as their interest has increased through the visits.
Student Isaac Cole, 16 from St Austell, who has aspirations to work in the Business Law sector in the future, said: “When I attended the court a defendant was being questioned by the prosecution lawyer. It was a really interesting experience, hearing all the questions and seeing the processes of the court room. I was surprised because in comparison to what you see on TV it is not as dramatic and the room itself was really modern.”
As the students attended on different days they all witnessed different events, including evidence from expert witnesses, prosecution and defence questioning.
Clarissa Minns, 16 from St Austell, previously a student at Penrice Community College, commented: “I learnt a lot from seeing a real court room in action. Everything from seeing the questioning to seeing how a real jury and judge act has been a fantastic learning experience.”
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, explained: “Being in the court room has given the students some great experience which will only enhance their learning and understanding of the course and how a real court room operates.”
