Course offers real radio experience
A UNIQUE opportunity to study radio production while making real-life shows is being offered to Cornish college students for the first time.
One of the country's leading training providers for creative industries, dBs, will be offering high quality, authentic hands-on radio making skills, preparing students for university, or employment within the industry.
Mark Trewin, dBs development director, pointed out the Extended Diploma at Cornwall College’s Camborne site is no ordinary course, with students making real radio content for dBs Radio and a range of other commercial and community stations.
He said: “We are seriously excited about our brand new radio production course, students will be able to get hands-on with the latest industry kit whilst spending spend much of their time making real radio for broadcast and web streaming.
“Alongside our already popular Music and DJ courses we're delighted to be able to offer Cornwall's school leavers and adults another top quality programme. This course will provide learners with fantastic qualifications which can get them into university or employment.”
Also core to this radio provision is the development of entrepreneurial, journalistic and communication skills.
Mr Trewin added: “We are very proud of our brand new centre in Camborne where we have dedicated radio studios, recording studios, practice rooms and teaching spaces. dBs is nothing like a standard college or sixth form.
'“Our students represent a diverse media and music-making community who work together to produce very exciting projects during their time with us. Redruth Radio sports presenter Scott Haley, 22, who is currently studying on the college’s Fast-Track NCTJ Journalism course, said: “I had to go up north to study radio production. If this course had been here a few years ago it would have been amazing.
“The chance to study radio and produce real shows with top industry trainers without leaving Cornwall is a fantastic opportunity.”
To be considered for a place, under 19s would normally need to have either a BTEC Level 2 Diploma, Intermediate GNVQ or equivalent in a related subject, or four GCSEs at grades D and above. Over 19s will be considered on the basis of their experience, enthusiasm and the potential to achieve.
Mr Trewin said: “We believe that many prospective students who may not have previously had a successful education are capable of achieving. If you feel you don’t have the necessary qualifications or experience please come and see us, we are always happy to help and advice.”
Students will spend one of the two-and-a-half days a week course working at the radio station, as well as studying radio skills from music to factual based programming.
