DUCHY College Rosewarne's annual Open Day proved extremely popular last weekend (Saturday 23rd June) with hundreds of people attending the event and even the sun making a rare appearance!

The Open Day offered visitors the opportunity to meet staff and students, explore the beautiful campus and get careers advice.

People tried their hand at the ‘digger challenge’, met the resident animals and some entered their pooches into the novelty dog show – which included the most handsome dog and dog the judge would most like to take home categories! Farm tours by tractor and trailer took members of the public around the campus, RedYOUth treated visitors to a fantastic dance performance and butcher Lester Crocker from Tiverton demonstrated the art of sausage making!

Shaun Rowe from St Austell, who visited with his family and met Viola the Tarantula said: “The kids are loving it, we’re having a great day out, this is the first time I’ve been here and it’s a fantastic site.”

Mary Chapman, from Redruth, was enjoying a meet the animal session with her daughter, Mary added: “It’s a great family day out, lots to see and do and really good fun. We’re definitely coming along next year!”

Other highlights included micro-propagation talks, plant pest and diseases advice, an Eden Project Carbon Exhibit, plant and craft sales and pond dipping.

Local exhibitors also took part in the day including Paradise Park, the Retired Greyhound Trust, Canine Crusaders, local beekeeper and expert Rodger Dewhurst, the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and Flying Start Nursery. The Shire Horse & Carriage Museum brought some of their beautiful horses along and Gwel-an-Mor introduced the public to Chewy the grass snake, an Eagle Owl and some Harris Hawks.

Andrew Counsell, Head of Duchy College, said: “Last year’s Open Day was popular but this one was bigger and better than ever. Staff and students did a fantastic job showcasing what the College has to offer and visitors had a great time exploring the campus. We’ve worked hard to show off our wonderful facilities and create a great family day out – a really successful event.”
