A horticulture graduate from Duchy College Rosewarne has just returned from the Guild of Agricultural Journalists Harvest Lunch 2011, at the Stationers' Hall in London, where she received the John Deere Training Runner-up Award.

Barbara Tremain, from Penzance, who completed her Horticulture Degree this summer, was presented with a cheque for £100 and a certificate.

Barbara said, “It was absolutely amazing, a real privilege to be there and I was thrilled to pick up the award.”

During the summer Barbara attended a journalism course for potential agricultural and horticultural journalists at the John Deere Limited headquarters in Langar, Nottingham. The course consisted of some journalism training and then a three-day work placement; Barbara undertook hers with Amateur Gardening in Dorset. As part of the course each student had to write a news story for judging by an experienced panel and Barbara’s was the runner-up winner.

“Working at Amateur Gardening was great; everyone was really lovely and it was great experience. Another article I wrote while working there was published in last month’s issue so it’s great to see my work in the magazine,” added Barbara. It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Barbara as she also received an award for mentoring with the Institute of Horticulture at their Annual General Meeting at Chelsea Physic Garden on Saturday 8th October.
