Engineering and Motor Vehicle students drive their way to success
ENGINEERING and Motor Vehicle students from Cornwall College St Austell were rewarded for their hard work and determination recently when staff hosted a special prize-giving ceremony in the College's Keay Theatre.
This year more than 200 students from areas such as St Austell, Bodmin, Truro, Falmouth, Delabole, Launceston, Newquay and Bude attended the event, with their parents and friends, after having completed a variety of Engineering and Motor Vehicle courses at the College; either full-time, part-time or as an apprentice. The evening was to celebrate the students’ success and achievements over the past year and many Apprentice employers were there to show their appreciation of their hard work.
The night got underway with a performance of ‘Fame’ by the BTEC Extended Diploma Dance students before Peter Mercy, Head of Technology, started the award presentations.
During the evening 30 different awards were presented, including Motor Vehicle Student of the Year presented by Tessa Claridge, Deputy Head of Cornwall College St Austell and Glenn Cutter and Glynn Barr from Mill Autoquip. Laura Edwards from Newquay collected this prize, which included a complete roller cabinet tool system. Laura said: “It was a complete surprise for me to have won this award, I wasn’t expecting it, but I’m chuffed to bits. I have loved studying at the College and meeting new people and can’t wait to go to university to study Automotive Engineering.”
Laura’s work throughout her course has been of the highest standard the tutors have seen since running the Level 3 Motor Vehicle IMIAL course and has been used throughout the country by the National Awarding body as an exemplar of good practice.
There was amazing support for the evening where many local sponsors provided their time and prizes for the event. Sponsors included West Pharmaceutical Services Ltd, Tulip Ltd, Wales & West Utilities Ltd, Daften Die-casting Ltd, Waldon Security Ltd, Cornwall College Business, Cromwell, Mill Autoquip, Steve Andrews Tyres Ltd, ABC Awards Ltd, IMI Awards Ltd, Bandvulc Tyres, Hawkins Motor Ltd, Flybe and Aston Martin.
Cameron Turner, from St Austell, who won the Most Improved IMIAL Level 2 Auto Electrics Student, sponsored by Mill Autoquip, said: “I’m really proud of myself to have won this award. Last year I didn’t really try as hard as I could have so decided to turn things around this year and put a lot more effort in, which certainly paid off.”
Grant Weedon and Luke Pazeley from Daften Die-casting Ltd, who sponsored two engineering awards, said: “It’s always a pleasure to come and see students achieve.”
Glenn Cutter and Glynn Barr from Mill Autoquip, added: “It’s a huge honour to be able to support the local community; these students are our customers of the future.”

“The evening was a great success,” said Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College. “Prizes and trophies were awarded to deserving students, whose efforts and achievements throughout the year have been astounding and I would like to congratulate them, their family and friends for supporting their studies and our staff for their continued hard work.”
