Arts & Media Summer Exhibition Showcase
The Arts and Media faculty at Camborne held their annual exhibition last week, allowing students from all creative courses to showcase their work.
The selection of pieces on show were from all manner of creative courses: Creative Contemporary Practice, Graphic Design, Clothing and Textiles, and Photography. These were exhibited around the three buildings at Camborne campus that house the Arts and Media faculty.
Not only were physical pieces of artwork on show but visitors also had the chance to look around dBs Music and check out the state of the art facilities they have on offer with their courses at Camborne. Music Production students were available to provide live music and entertainment in a bid to showcase the quality of the study being undertaken. There was also a game room opened up to allow visitors to get a full understanding of the design aspect behind the new Game Design course. Local schools came to visit and were given guided tours around the whole exhibition and allowed to have a mini-taster session of any area of the faculty that they were interested in.
The media element this year featured an explosive mix of student work ranging from short film, animation, game design, graphic design and documentary. One of the main highlights of the exhibition this year was the Cornwall College Film School production ‘Birdbrain', a poster campaign project which allowed students to work with Cornwall and Devon Fire Brigade and the NHS, produce live web casts and a drink driving awareness animation featuring a bumble bee. Extended Diploma Media Production course manager Rory Mason said: "The media exhibition this year has been a great success, plenty of people coming in to see what our students have produced and worked on this year."
One student in particular exhibited a very special piece of art. Caroline Parker, who also teaches at the College and is from Newquay, has been asked to exhibit her piece "55 boxes" for the Santorini Biennale Summer 2012. This is an exhibition to promote and showcase established and emerging artists. Caroline, who is on the foundation degree course in Contemporary Ceramic Practice, is delighted to be showcasing her art to a wider audience.
"55 boxes" is a story of a life, from birth to the present day. Caroline said: "Each box represents a year of my life, some are more significant than others and you can tell that by the design I have incorporated into them." Caroline has showcased three different collections for the Cornwall College Summer Exhibition but only the "55 boxes" piece will be carefully transported to the Greek island Santorini, where it will stay until September.
Speaking specifically about the materials she has used to produce the piece, Caroline said: "Porcelain, with its fragility and strength, is indicative of my personality and is representative of the experiences in my life. For example, the two smaller boxes represent the birth of my two children, three boxes are out of line with the others that represent people that are no longer part of my life and there are also tiny ceramic artefacts, such as books, in some boxes that hold special memories for me."
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "The Summer Exhibition, as always, has been a great success this year and shows the talent and creativity of our students to the general public. Caroline who is not only a student but a colleague has created a wonderful piece of ceramic art and is well deserving of selection for the Santorini Biennale this summer; I am very pleased for her."
