2012 Degree Support Package Announced
Cornwall College has announced that it will offer up to twenty scholarships each worth £3,000 to students starting university-level courses in 2012, as part of a comprehensive financial support package.
The scholarships, funded by the College, will be awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement in key subject areas or for students who have overcome significant challenges.
Scholarships will be available for STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), Business and Enterprise, Creative Arts and Media, Hospitality and Tourism, Sport and Marine and for specialist subjects at Duchy College, part of the Cornwall College Group.
All students who apply to one of the College’s seven county sites including Duchy College and Falmouth Marine School will have the chance to apply for a scholarship. Applications will be taken from April 2012, interviews will take place in the early summer with scholarships being awarded through a selection panel during August next year.
With tuition fees of £6,000 per year for university-level courses in 2012, Cornwall College is offering high quality degrees at a considerably lower rate than many of the region’s higher education institutions.

In addition to the College’s own scholarship scheme, a range of other financial support will be available to students from low income households.
Students with household incomes below £25,000 may be eligible to apply for one of 48 National Scholarship Programme (NSP) bursaries of £3,000, part-funded by the Government. This will consist of a £2,000 reduction in tuition fees and a payment of £1,000 directly to the recipient. Priority will be given to care leavers or lone parents and is available to those paying full fees for the course and accessing all the other loans and grants to which they are entitled.
The College will offer core bursaries of between £500 and £3,000 from a total bursary fund of just over £200,000. Those with a household income of below £42,601 who have confirmed Cornwall College as their firm choice for a full-time degree may be eligible to apply for the funding to help with transport, accommodation, equipment, childcare or essential living expenses.
Applications forms for the NSP bursaries and the Cornwall College core bursaries can be requested from April 2012 and will be accepted from June 2012. Bursaries will be allocated to those who meet the criteria once an assessment has been made in order of the date of application.
An Access to Learning Fund will also continue to operate an Emergency Support Bursary Scheme for those who find themselves in hardship during their studies.

Cornwall College is the biggest education provider in the county and one of the largest colleges in the UK. It offers university-level courses in a wide range of subject areas, with all undergraduate courses approved by Plymouth University.
The College’s higher education standards were recently praised by Plymouth University during a review of courses and facilities. Mark Stone, Associate Dean of the University’s Colleges Faculty said: “The review at Cornwall College highlights the high quality higher education provision developed and supported through the collaboration between Plymouth University and the College.”
