A star media student from Cornwall College Camborne has not only achieved the highest grade for his National Diploma course but has also managed to secure a place on one of the country's top Film Production degree courses.

James Chisholm, 23, from Teignmouth has achieved a distinction grade in all 18 units of his National Diploma Media Production course. For Cornwall College this is the first time a student has achieved such a high grade on this course.

Rory Mason, Media Production Course Manager explains: “I have been working on this course for ten years and this is the first time a student has achieved this. The class as a whole have been fantastic with everyone passing the course and for the 6th year in a row we have achieved a hundred per cent pass rate. However, James’ success cannot go unnoticed.

“He travelled nearly two hours a day from Teignmouth to study with us as well as holding down an evening job. Without any shadow of doubt, James is one of the most outstanding students the course team have had the pleasure of teaching. He worked on more professional video projects than any student previously, and, is a highly driven and focused young man who, without doubt will go on to big things.”

“After attending the interview at Cornwall College I knew this was the place I wanted to study. I loved the fact the course had a practically focused base and was industry linked. No other colleges could offer camera cranes or professional cameras at this level. The Film Studies unit was amazing and the Film School project was a real eye opener to the real pressures of working on a film. It’s been a great platform to progress my studies,” said James.

In September James will be starting his Film Production and Cinematography BA (Hons) degree at Bournemouth University. This much coveted route only accepts a handful of students each year.

“This is a unique qualification; students on this course are real film stock and go on to great things. It’s a brilliant achievement and opportunity for James and we wish him all the luck for the future,” added Rory.

Dave Linnell OBE, Principal of Cornwall College, said: “Our success in arts and media has recently been recognised by Ofsted with inspectors praising the outstanding work achieved in media courses. This is a wonderful feat for James and he is a great ambassador for the College.”
