ANIMAL Management students from Duchy College Rosewarne enjoyed a fun trip to Paignton Zoo last week where they learnt more about zoo husbandry and came face-to-face with its residents.
First and second year students studying the Animal Management Extended Diploma Level 3 course visited the zoo as part of their studies.
Animal Management Lecturer Jill Thrower explained: “The students study zoo animal nutrition, health and welfare, handling and restraint and housing and enclosure design during the course. This visit provided an opportunity to see the work of one of the country’s leading zoological collections in terms of housing and enrichment for their animals as well as enjoying a good day out.”
The students saw various animals including monkeys, lions, tapirs, a baby giraffe, meerkats, snakes and crocodiles.
Hannah Torry, 18, from Camborne, said: “We had a brilliant time, there was so much to see, I hadn’t been to Paignton Zoo in ages and there are lots of new exhibits. This will help with our assignment; we learnt lots and were able to look at the different enclosure designs and how the animals are looked after, a great trip.”
Next month some of the students will be going on a trip to Holland where they will be able to make comparisons with zoos over there.
Andrew Counsell, Head of Duchy College, said: “Students really benefit from these kinds of trips; they enjoy mixing education with fun visits like this - it gives them a chance to develop their knowledge and experiences.”
