School students from South East Cornwall studying on vocational qualifications at Cornwall College Saltash were honoured for their vocational achievements recently at the annual Celebration of Success ceremony held at the St Mellion International Resort.

Achievement awards were presented by Nicky Taylor, a Cornwall College Saltash council member, to those students who have completed their course and demonstrated exceptional hard work and success.

The groups of learners, who are from schools and colleges including saltash.net, Looe Community Academy, Liskeard School and Community College, Marine Academy Plymouth, Torpoint Community College and Callington Community College, study a vocational course at the College for one day a week over two years alongside their GCSEs. The vocational areas include Hair and Beauty, Construction, Childcare and Hospitality.

Kirsten Puddephatt, Schools Partnership Manager at the College said: “All of our students have done exceptionally well over the two years they have spent with us and we are proud to celebrate their achievements with them. Studying at college is a big step for many of them but they have all been a credit to both their schools and the College. We wish them all the best with their future studies.”

In addition to all of the students receiving certificates during the presentation there were Student of the Year awards and special Achievement Awards presented.

Sophie Chapple (16) from Saltash was the Student of the Year for Childcare. She said: “My course has been great fun and I’ve learnt so much in my time at college and have gained many invaluable skills. My tutor, Clare Jeffery, is one in a million.”

Student of the Year awards also went to: Nathan Alexander for Construction and the Built Environment, Megan Howells for Hospitality, Nakylia Atkin, Shelby Heasman and Sophie Rowlands for Hair and Beauty, and  Ben Evans, Luke Pengelly and Sam Lloyd for Construction. The Childcare group also received an Achievement Award.

Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said: “The College has a fantastic working relationship with local schools and has great success working with school learners. The level of achievement and success the learners are displaying goes to show how hard everybody is working together in partnership.”

Many of the students who follow this scheme progress onto the next level in their chosen vocational areas of study.
