Saltash Access students achieve 100% success rate
Students who studied on the Access to Higher Education courses at Cornwall College Saltash this year have achieved, for the second year in a row, a 100 per cent acceptance success rate for those who applied to progress onto a course at university.
Of the 109 Access students who applied via UCAS to start a university course this September all got a place to continue their studies with 107 being accepted on to their first choice.
With places at university becoming more competitive the results show that the Access route is now becoming as recognised as the A-level and BTEC Level 3 routes traditionally used as a springboard to higher education.
Kevin Smale, Programme Manager for Access to Higher Education at Saltash said: “Our students have achieved great success and we are incredibly proud that all those who applied to university have got in. This 100 per cent record is something that we are immensely proud of and we outperform other local providers. Our students prepare for further study from the very start of their course and this, coupled with hard work, has proved to be very successful.”
The College’s Saltash campus has long had a record of success with its Access provision and the range of courses has grown over the years and now includes courses in; Art, Business, Computing, Health and Social Care, Leisure and Event Management, Nursing, Science, Teaching and Tourism and Hospitality.
Access to Business student, Kathryn Aldridge from Torpoint finished her course this year and is due to start a degree in Criminology with Law at Plymouth University this September. She said: “I started at the College studying on the Pre-Access course which gave me a great foundation to begin the Access to Business course last September. I found the course really interesting and the support I have received throughout has been fantastic. I am now looking forward to the next chapter in my education by going to university this September.”
Those students who want to progress to university are well supported by staff from the very start of their course until the end and the College has significant learning resources that aid and support study, university applications and personal statements.
Head of Faculty Peter Castell added: “The Access to Higher Education pathway is the ideal way for those adults looking to get back into education with the desire of going to university and pursing a great career in the future. The courses are well recognised and respected by universities and, as our successes show, our results are amongst the very best around.”
Within the College at Saltash there is also the opportunity to progress onto one of the campus’ Foundation Degrees, validated by Plymouth University, including Early Childhood Studies and Business.
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College added: “Our Access students at the Saltash campus have shown great levels of success each year and we are, as a college, very proud of their achievements and wish them the very best with their future plans.”
