Cornwall students team up with Council to analyse renewable energy housing
Cornwall College Camborne students have recently paired up with Cornwall Council as part of their Planning for Energy module.
Students on the FdA Renewable Energy Technologies course have been working alongside the Camborne, Roskear and Tuckingmill Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) by repairing historic buildings in the area with original and eco-friendly materials.
The THI places an emphasis on traditional skills and methods used in construction and restoration projects throughout Cornwall. The initiative is part financed by funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, Cornwall Council and Camborne Town Council.
The Camborne students will monitor various energy saving aspects over a 12 month period and integrate methods that will not interrupt the original look of the building, such as draft proofing original single-glazed windows, using hemp based plaster and breathable wood fibre for insulation purposes.
Andrew Richards, Advice Team Leader for Cornwall Council, said: "THI funds quality traditional repairs to remaining historic buildings. Completed works provide a benchmark for future building renovations and links with the college provide a tremendous opportunity to share good practice with students who could eventually work in the local area."
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said "This is a great opportunity for our students as energy saving is something that is much more necessary to be aware of these days. It will give our students the chance to monitor the effects of various energy saving techniques and build a report with the Council on whether they are beneficial to run down buildings."
