Students make noise for World Aids Day
Cornwall College St Austell staff and students made a right racket in the College's Student Union, 'The Treg' on December 1st to raise awareness of HIV for World Aids Day. Armed with cymbals, maracas, whistles, a megaphone and an array of other musical instruments and props, students made a minute of noise to alert others around the College to the cause.
Students and staff gathered in the Treg whilst CCSU representatives handed out instruments, cans filled with dried pasta and squeaky batons to everyone wanting to get involved along with information on HIV, red World Aids Day ribbons and condoms. Students were able to access confidential advice and literature to take away with them about HIV, AIDS and sexual health throughout the day.
Al Green, Sexual Health Coordinator for the NHS Health Promotion Service, commented: “HIV is the fastest growing long-term illness in the UK and over a quarter of those infected are unaware they have the disease. We want to raise awareness and encourage young people to use a condom and get checked out at a sexual health clinic.”
Ben Rowswell, Student Liaison Manager, commented: “It’s brilliant that we are able to raise the profile of activities such as these with the students across all seven campuses. This is one the many campaigns we are involved in and that will be taking place over the year.”
