Course Studied: Introduction to Boatbuilding NVQ1
From: Milton Keynes
I have always been interested in woodwork but wanted to go for something a little more complex than simple joinery, so I decided to look into boatbuilding and found this course.
It's been great! I hadn't done lots of woodwork before and this year has really helped lay down the foundations and build up my confidence on both the woodwork and theory side. The course is made up of around two and a half days of practical work and one and a half of theory a week and a couple of the weeks are spent working on fibreglass projects down at Ponsharden.
We've also been on quite a few field trips. We went to the Southampton Boat Show a week after the start of the course. We've also been shown around the Falmouth Docks and the RNLI Coastguard Station. There are also some opportunities to sail and do watersports.
It has been nice getting to know my classmates throughout the year, who have been a good mix of the young and not so young who came from all over the country. Everyone has been really friendly and the tutors are really helpful. I've had a great experience at Falmouth Marine School and I am looking forward to coming back next year.
Once I finish the course I'm hoping to go on to the Traditional Boatbuilding course and then would like go aboard to work, perhaps in the US, Australia or New Zealand.
